The design had to be able to accommodate 2 expansions

The base game design with the expansion cards is in the card wells. The card wells accommodate sleeves without the expansion content. 

Treasure chests from one expansion fit in the tray.

I store the sea monster wood pieces in one of the treasure chests

Finally, the extra player boards have to fit on top of the board, but they do not cause any lid lift
